Original painting.  Black walnut ink, graphite and pen on paper, mounted on maple.


I make all my black walnut ink, picking up enough hulls from the walnut tree from the ground where they drop, green, in the late summer.  I wait for them to ferment, turning a rich brown, soak them in creek water, then boil it down over a fire into a concentrated ink.  Each batch lasts a couple of years.
